Michael Newdow

Ordained Minister of Universal Life Church
Founder of FACTS (First Atheist Church of True Science)

Mike Newdow is an average guy who actually started his first religious institution while in junior high school in New Jersey. He finished high school there, and then undertook some university work in assorted locations. In 1977, he became an ordained minister, and has since lived his life according to the tenets of the Universal Life Church, which basically state: "Do what's right." In 1997, he started his second religious institution, the First Atheist Church of True Science (FACTS). Although that ministry holds a firmly atheistic view of the world, it strongly supports the ideals behind the Religion Clauses of the First Amendment of the United States Constitution.

In 1996, he was awarded First Place in the Delta Omega Honorary Society of Public Health Student Essay Contest, writing on "Empowering the Disadvantaged: Social Justice in Public Health." In 1998, he obtained his Doctor of the Universe Degree. The Rev. Dr. Newdow has the usual varied hobbies, including writing, music, theater, and sports. He has traveled fairly extensively, and dabbles in computer programming. He has written fun things such as the Polysyllabic C-words in History, and has CDs available, including Liberty and Justice for All (a collection of songs related to his Establishment Clause litigation) and Merry Solstice! (which is comprised of Christmas carols, altered for the enjoyment of Atheistic listeners). Probably his greatest interest is fatherhood - he has one truly delightful daughter, for whom he has great hopes and plans. Included among these is the one he's working on now: her ability to go to public school free from daily theistic indoctrination, as is her right, guaranteed by the California and the United States Constitutions.

FACTS (First Atheist Church of True Science)

Newdow Quotes:

"One day I was just looking at the coins (that) is what brought this up. I saw 'In God We Trust' on my coins. I said, 'I don't trust in God,' what is this? And I recalled there was something in the Constitution that said you're not allowed to do that and so I did some research. And as soon as I did the research, I realized the law seemed to be on my side and I filed the suit. It's a cool thing to do. Everyone should try it."

"Those who deny the existence of a supreme being have been turned into second-class citizens by a government that continuously sends messages that 'real Americans' believe in God. "

“I have the right to be able to have my child in public school without her being indoctrinated with religious belief, ... This is supposed to be a public school and supposed to be religion-free.”

Liberty & Justice For All Music CD
By Rev. Dr. Michael Newdow.

Mike Newdow has been battling for years to have the Supreme Court declare the pledge of allegiance unconstitutional. Now listen to his story told by him in these humorous folk songs! The sentiments are strong and clear, and the production is very much home-made. $10 goes directly to Mr. Newdow's campaign for each CD purchased.

Pledge of Allegiance Blues DVD
This is the fascinating story of Michael Newdow, blues-playing atheist physician from Sacramento CA, who brought the landmark lawsuit to remove the unconstitutional words: "under God," from the Pledge of Allegiance. The film includes scenes of the controversy over the Ten Commandments monument in Alabama and investigates the sinister intertwining of religion and government in America. Larry Flynt and Attorney Alan Dershowitz also appear in the film which has been called "unexpectedly semi-satiric!" (dir - Lisa Seidenberg, 72 mins)
