"Long ago, people didn't understand testing and retesting to arrive at a fact. When they didn't understand something like a volcano erupting or the earth shaking, they thought that some very powerful being was making it happen. They called that someone or something a god.

"Being good and kind doesn't mean showing up at church and performing religious traditions and rituals. It means not being cruel to others, and helping people in need." Religions discussed in the book include Buddhism, Islam, Christianity, Judaism, Catholicism, and Mormonism. In its direct and easy to read language, it reinforces the idea that no one belief system is "right," thus no others can be "wrong." He also states that doing good can be done, and should be done, independent of belief in any deity. A must for any Atheist or Humanist children's library.

Started a great family discussion! I'm sure there are many more conversations to have, but it was a great starting point. The power of the written word to validate is essential for those who want to raise moral, ethical children without the influence of religion. Helped my son to feel less "left out".
