What has the GOP done for Veterans lately?
- A recent proposal cuts $75 million from the 2011 budget which would eliminate 10,000 housing vouchers for homeless vets.
- They expect vets to pay for the shortfall in VA healthcare funding out of their own pockets! One recent example has co-pays on prescription drugs increasing from $7 to $15.
- Additionally, the same budget proposal calls for some veterans to pay a $250 a year "user fee" to get the benefits of government health care. The GOP says that the extra fee would be charged to veterans in “lower-priority” categories.
- Some proposed budget cuts, like the one from Tea Party leader, Rep. Michele Bachmann, Republican of Minnesota, want to cut $4.5 billion by capping increases to health care spending for vets and reducing some disability compensation.
- In February, Republicans adopted a budget amendment imposing a seven-month moratorium on all legal fees paid under the Equal Access to Justice Act (EAJA), a Reagan-era law that has helped some vets battle Washington by making it easier for them to afford an attorney.
